Pursuing the Abundant Life in the Spirit

DEVOTION • “One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple” (Ps 27:4).

There is so much more to life than financial security, good health, an easy marriage, personal success, and raising kids that make us proud.

Because of our lack of holy ambition to experience and know the presence and power of God firsthand, many Christians stagnate in the spiritual doldrums. Ancient sailors dreaded the doldrums, a region of the ocean near the equator characterized by calm and unpredictable winds. Without wind, ships could become stranded, leading to desperation and suffering.

In God’s mercy, we don’t have to passively wait for spiritual breakthroughs. Actively pursue the abundant life in the Spirit Jesus offers! Seek God’s face in prayer and Scripture. Foster a desire and love for Christ that invites the work of the Spirit in you.

We can pray the words of Psalm 27:4, 8:

“One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple… You have said, ‘Seek my face.’ My heart says to you, ‘Your face, Lord, do I seek.’”

Heavenly Father, help me to actively pursue the abundant life in the Spirit, seeking your face in prayer and Scripture every day. Amen.
